The company was founded in November 2003 by a team of investment managers that previously managed hedge funds at Coronation, one of South Africa’s premier financial services companies. Breakwater Capital focuses exclusively on the management of hedge funds and the founders have an enviable track record in this regard.

The lack of a bureaucratic, committee-based structure facilitates quick decision making and independence of investment thinking. Our emphasis is on pursuing superior investment returns rather than on asset accumulation. This is reflected in a strong preference for performance-based fees and a cap on the funds under management. The investment managers, Andrew Koch and Tracy Morkel, are also the owners of the business and both invest in the funds they manage.

The business focuses exclusively on South African listed equities and Breakwater Capital does not manage fixed income or foreign investments.

The company is licensed by the Financial Services Board of South Africa as a Financial Services Provider.
